Snowy Owl (nyctea scandiaca)

Snowy Owl (nyctea scandiaca)

This large sub-arctic owl, one of the largest species in the world, continues to hang on in the Shetland Islands, although it has failed to breed for a number of years. The specimen photographed, a strongly barred hen bird, was a captive individual from Scotland. Total population estimated at up to 6 birds (all females).
