Common Barn Owl (tyto alba)
Eric Hosking in his classic book on owls suggests that the Barn Owl's method of hunting, crossing and covering large areas of open ground, known as 'quartering', may have given rise to the now established pattern of aerial search and rescue. Its 'lazy' flapping and silent gliding give it the best possible view of potential prey. |
