Common Barn Owl (tyto alba)

Common Barn Owl (tyto alba)

Owls have long been associated with magic and witchcraft, often seen as harbingers of death - in certain communities it was a fairly widespread 'fact' a hundred years ago that if an owl perched on a house roof, it could signify a death in that household. Because of its appearance - ghost-like - its 'face' and its eerie call, it is no wonder that the Barn Owl was viewed by many in the Middle Ages (and since) as a bird of ill omen.
